It's a crafty world: Crin - The fading craft of Chile's 'living human treasures'

I first heard about Crin when I met Macarena, a lively, petite girl with big butterfly tattoos and impressive spider-web resembling earrings. Macarena was from Chile; she was studying Industrial Design and was taking afternoon silversmithing classes on the side. Her purpose was to create a unique wedding ring and necklace set for her sister, using a combination of silversmithing techniques with the traditional Chilean craft of Crin.

Her earrings were made by her grandmother, who passed her down the philosophy and techniques of Crin; a form of very delicate weaving using horse hair, usually dyed in vibrant colors. Crin originates from the remote Chilean village of Rari. The women of this village have developed this craftwork for more than two centuries, as it was transmitted from mothers to daughters. It’s a technique similar to basket weaving which begun by using Alamo roots fiber and evolved to the use of dyed horse hair to weave delicate and colorful figures.

Nowadays, there are only a few people left practicing the craft as a full time job. Crin weavers, called 'living human treasures' by the National Arts and Culture Council, usually have to take up alternative occupation in the summer, as the Chilean summer heat makes it prohibitive working with delicate fibers. It is estimated that around 100 people in total practice the craft, among them 10 men. As with many dying arts, Crin relies upon the interest of younger people, like Macarena, to be preserved and cherished by future generations.

Cooking with the Cyprus team: Anna's Brownies

Υλικά: 

2 φλιτζάνια ζάχαρη

4 αυγά

1 1/2 πακέτο βούτυρο ανάλατο 

320γρ. σοκολάτα κουβερτούρα

2 φλιτζάνια αλεύρι

1 πρέζα αλάτι

1 κουταλάκι κοφτό Baking Powder

Εκτέλεση: 

Χτυπούμε στο μίξερ τα αυγά με τη ζάχαρη να αφρατέψουν. Ταυτόχρονα σ' ένα κατσαρολάκι λιώνουμε το βούτυρο σε χαμηλή φωτιά να μην κάψει και ρίχνουμε μέσα τη σοκολάτα σε κομματάκια να λιώσει. 

Στη συνέχεια ρίχνουμε σιγά-σιγά το βούτυρο με τη σοκολάτα στο μείγμα των αυγών, αφήνουμε λίγο να χτυπηθούν και να ενωθούν μεταξύ τους. 

Ακολούθως, προσθέτουμε το αλεύρι λίγο-λίγο, το οποίο έχουμε αναμείξει με το baking powder. 

Αφού ενωθούν καλά μεταξύ τους, βάζουμε το μείγμα στο ταψί και ψήνουμε τα brownies σε προθερμασμένο φούρνο στους 180 βαθμούς για 18 λεπτά ακριβώς.

Μόλις τελειώσει ο χρόνος, σβήνουμε τον φούρνο και βγάζουμε το ταψί να κρυώσει. 

Τα brownies πρέπει να είναι λίγο υγρά από μέσα. 

Ingredients:

2 cups sugar

4 eggs

1 1/2 pack of unsalted butter 

320gr dark chocolate 

2 cups flour

little pinch of salt

1 tea spoon Baking Powder

Preparation:

Put the eggs and the sugar in a bowl and mix them with the blender until they are fluffy. At the same time in small saucepan, melt the butter and chocolate in low heat until the ingredients melt completely. 

Afterwards slowly add the butter and chocolate mixture, into the egg mixture. Add the flour slowly and beat all together. 

Put the mixture in your pan and bake at 180 degrees for exactly 18 minutes. 

Remove the pan immediately after the time's up and let it cool before you cut it into small pieces. 

Best served warm with ice cream if you like! The brownies have to be moist inside…!

First Etsy Event in Limassol!

Την Κυριακή 1 Μαρτίου 2015 είχαμε την πρώτη μας ETSY συνάντηση στη Λεμεσό στο Gloria Jean's Coffees! Μετά από ήδη 4 πετυχημένες συναντήσεις στη Λευκωσία ήταν σίγουρα η στιγμή για να γίνει η πρώτη μας συνάντηση στην όμορφη Λεμεσό! Γνωρίσαμε επιτέλους από κοντά ΕTSY sellers που μένουν στη Λεμεσό και λόγω απόστασης δεν μπορούσαν να συμμετάσχουν στις προηγούμενες συναντήσεις μας στην πρωτεύουσα. Συζητήσαμε για το πώς μπορούμε να βελτιώσουμε τα ETSY shops μας και μιλήσαμε για τα μελλοντικά μας πλάνα! Ακόμη γνωρίσαμε άτομα που ενδιαφέρονται να ανοίξουν το δικό τους ETSY shop και τους ενημερώσαμε πως αυτό γίνεται. Όπως και οι προηγούμενες συναντήσεις μας, και σε αυτή τα μέλη της ομάδας μας ήρθαν πιο κοντά και οι περισσότεροι (ή όλοι!) από μας ανυπομονούμε για την επόμενη συνάντηση μας. Και ποιος ξέρει ίσως την επόμενη φορά να είναι ένα craft party δίπλα στη θάλασσα ή σε ένα πάρκο!

On Sunday the 1st of March 2015 we had our first ETSY meeting in Limassol at Gloria Jean's Coffees! After 4 sucessful meetings in Nicosia, it was the moment to have our first meeting in beautiful Limassol! We finally met ETSY sellers, who live in Limassol and they couldn't join our meetings in the capital because of the distance. We discussed about how to improve our ETSY shops and we talked about our future plans! Also we met people that they are interested to open their own ETSY shops and we informed them how they can open an ETSY shop. As in our previous meetings, once again our team's members came closer and the most (or all!) of us are looking forward to our next meeting. And who knows, probably our next meeting will be a craft party on the beach or in a park!

Πες μας λίγα πράγματα για τον εαυτό σου.
Ονομάζομαι Βούλα Παναγή και δημιούργησα το ~Designs by Voula~ στη Χαβάη το 1997. Σχεδιάζω κοσμήματα από ασήμι, επίχρυσα, πέρλες και πετράδια. Από τότε που μετακόμισα στη Κύπρο πρόσθεσα και τα Swarovski σε κάποιες δημιουργίες μου.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Voula Panayi, I created ~Designs by Voula~ in Hawaii in 1997. I design jewelry with sterling silver, gold filled, freshwater pearls and gem stones, although since moving to Cyprus I also incorporate Swarovski elements into some of my designs.

Πότε και γιατί άνοιξες το etsy shop σου;
Για πολύ καιρό σκεφτόμουνα να ανοίξω το δικό μου etsy shop και τελικά πήρα την μεγάλη απόφαση το 2014. Ακόμη έχω αρκετή δουλειά για το φέρω στο σημείο που θα ήθελα! Ο στόχος μου είναι να αφιερώσω περισσότερο χρόνο αυτό το χρόνο, για να δείξω τις δημιουργίες μου στο κόσμο!

When and why did you open your etsy shop?
I have been contemplating on opening my etsy shop for quite some time and finally took the plunge in 2014. I still have a long way to go to getting it where I want it to be! My goal is to dedicate more time this year, to get my designs out into the world!

Εκτός από το να δημιουργείς, με τι άλλο ασχολείσαι;
Είμαι σύζυγος και μητέρα δύο παιδιών. Έχω μια κόρη που είναι στο δεύτερο έτος στο Πανεπιστήμιο και ένα γιο που είναι στο λύκειο. Μου αρέσει να κολυμπάω (Απρίλιο με Νοέμβριο) και όταν δεν είμαι μέσα στο νερό προσπαθώ να πηγαίνω για περπάτημα. Και δημιουργώ. Αν όχι κοσμήματα τότε κάτι άλλο σχετικό με το σπίτι.

Apart from creating things, what do you do?
I am a wife and mother of 2, my daughter is in her second year at The University and my son is in High School. I enjoy swimming as exercise (April-November) and try to walk when I'm not in the water. Most of the time I create if not jewelry something else crafty around the house.

Τι σε εμπνέει και από πού παίρνεις ιδέες;
Πιστεύω ότι το μυαλό του καλλιτέχνη δεν σταματάει ποτέ να δουλεύει! Όλα τα μικρά εγκεφαλικά μας κύτταρα είναι πάντα ενεργά!

What inspires you and where do your ideas come from?
I believe an artists mind never stops working! All our little brain cells are always at work!

Ποια είναι τα αγαπημένα σου υλικά; 
To απόλυτο αγαπημένο μου υλικό είναι οι freshwater πέρλες, οι ίριδες στις πέρλες είναι ένα φυσικό θαύμα! Οι φυσικές πέτρες επίσης, είναι πάντα συναρπαστικές. Μπορεί να φτιάξεις κάτι το ίδιο αλλά θα είναι διαφορετικό επειδή η πέτρα ή η πέρλα είναι φυσική.

What are your favorite materials?
My absolute favorite item to work with is freshwater pearls, the iridescence in the pearls is a natural wonder! Natural stones are always fascinating. You may make something the same but it will be different because the stones or pearls are natural.

Γιατί κάποιος να αγοράσει κάτι χειροποίητο;
Τα χειροποίητα αντικείμενα φτιάχνονται από τους δημιουργούς με πάθος και αγάπη και μεταφέρουν θετική ενέργεια!

Why should somebody buy handmade?
Handmade items purchased from artisans/craftsmen, are made with passion and love, and they spread a good energy!

Πώς προωθείς την δουλειά σου; 
Η δουλειά μου κυρίως προωθείται από στόμα σε στόμα και μέσω των social media!

How do you promote your work?
My work is mostly promoted by word of mouth and social media!

Πιστεύεις ότι η Κύπρος είναι ιδανικό μέρος για καλλιτέχνες;
Αν και η Κύπρος έχει κάνει μεγάλες προόδους, πιστεύω ότι ακόμη έχουμε πολύ δουλειά μπροστά μας.

Do you think Cyprus is an ideal place for an artist?
Even thou Cyprus has come a long way for artists, I believe we still have a lot of work ahead of us.

Πες μας κάποια από τα αγαπημένα σου βιβλία, ταινίες, τραγούδια/τραγουδιστές και ιστοσελίδες.

Μεγάλωσα την δεκαετία του '70, άρα φυσικά μου αρέσει το rock and roll, η ποπ μουσική και η alternative! Μου αρέσουν τα μιούζικαλς όπως η Εβίτα, οι δραματικές ταινίες και να διαβάζω μυθηστορήματα. Το πάθος μου είναι η διακόσμηση σπιτιού, με στυλ κυρίως από τα μέσα του αιώνα! Απολαμβάνω το window shopping στο ίντερνετ και να κοιτάω κοσμήματα σε διάφορες ιστοσελίδες!! 

Tell us your top books, movies, songs/musical groups and web sites.
Well I'm a child that grew up in the 70s, so naturally I love rock and roll, pop music, and most of all alternative! I enjoy musicals even in film, like Evita, I love suspense movies, and I read novels quite a bit! I have a passion for home design especially mid century! I enjoy window shopping on the internet, and looking at different jewelry designer sites!!

Σε δέκα χρόνια από τώρα…
Σε 10 χρόνια από τώρα αν και ακούγονται πολύ μακριά, θα έρθουν σύντομα, ελπίζω να ξεκινήσω να ασχολούμε με την αργυροχοϊα! Έχω πάθος με το bezel set.

In ten years from now…
In ten years from now even thou it sounds far away, it does creep up fast, I would certainly hope I am doing some silversmithing! I have a passion for anything bezel set.
